ASL Services
ATN Can Arrange ASL interpreting services for the Skills for Employment program.

This gives clients who are deaf equal opportunity to upgrade their academic and computer skills.  Self worth and confidence develops as they proceed through the in class time of the program.

SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT

  

 

Skills for Employment program is designed to lead directly to job search.

 

Employment (full or part-time) is the ultimate goal.

 

Program Description 

 The Skills for Employment Program is designed to assist participants in their active job search through the development and maintenance of employment specific skills.
  • Comprehensive program includes Essential Skills development, Job Search Skills and Computer Training
  • Small classes mean more individual attention; maximum class size 10
  • 7 weeks of in-class instruction; 30 hours per week
  • Non-Paid work placement
Focus on Essential Skills for the Workplace

  • Reading and comprehension; following instructions; understanding employment related material
  • Writing for communication; business letters; emails
  • Numeracy Skills: budgeting cash handling, scheduling, measuring and estimation
  • Thinking Skills: planning and organizing tasks, problem solving
Job Search Skills

  • Career Development and self assessment using a variety of tools
  • Job Search Skills: creating resumes, cover letters, and thank you letters; networking, honing interview skills; self marketing, researching the job market
  • Job Maintenance Skills: professionalism in the workplace; maintaining a positive attitude; effective problem solving techniques
  • Job Placement: participants are placed with an employer for 10 weeks; those who are not hired through their placements are helped with job search for as long as they require assistance

 

Personal Life Management Skills

  • The focus of this component of the program is to develop the group as a team and enhance interpersonal, problem solving, communication and presentation skills
Computer Skills

  • Keyboarding practice to increase speed and accuracy
  • Microsoft Word: creating business letters, resumes
  • Microsoft Excel: learn the basics, create a budget
  • Internet: responsible use, searching for information, using webmail
